Welcome back to our blog series on road trip planning tips! There’s no better time to plan your vacation than summer, and with New Victorian Inn & Suites, you can get access to incredible hotels in Lincoln and other parts of Nebraska (and even Illinois!). Take a look at some of the things you can do and actions you can take to make this road trip your best one yet. And of course, be sure to schedule in a stop at one of our many hotels!
Continuing from last time, we’ll pick up again from where we left off (Tip #4).
Tip #5: Stock Up on Snacks
Honestly, what is a road trip without snacks? Eating while on the road makes the drive a little more entertaining, and doesn’t require you to unnecessarily stop. Plus, it can save you a ton of money — stopping to eat every time you’re hungry, or for every meal, means spending at least $15 a person a day. Conversely, $15 worth of snacks can last everyone for several days.
From a logical standpoint, when you’re on the road, you’re not using nearly as much energy, so you don’t truly need to eat as much as you might when you’re more active in your normal schedule. But that doesn’t mean having snacks isn’t both necessary and kind of fun, at that! Here’s what we recommend:
-
Make it a priority to have around 80-85 percent of your snacks be healthy. Gummy worms, Swedish Fish, Reeses Pieces, and Pringles taste amazing, but you won’t feel amazing if you’re eating like this the entire road trip. For some healthier things to stock up on, try:
- Carrot sticks with hummus
- Celery with peanut butter
- Easy-to-eat vegetables, such as mini peppers or jicama sticks
- No-mess fruits, such as grapes, blueberries, and bananas
- Sandwiches, or the ingredients to make them
- Veggie chips
- Get yourself a sweet treat or two! What road trip would be complete without some yummy chocolate covered pretzels, or really any snack that exists from Trader Joe’s? Just remember that chocolate tends to melt quickly in a sunny car, so you might want to have some napkins on hand. Or…
- Pack a cooler to store perishable items. Make sure it fits with all your stuff, and is easy to access!
Tip #6: Take Your Time
Road trips, as fun as they can be, can absolutely be exhausting. Spending lots of time driving can be stressful and tiring after a long day. Whether you’re the driver or the loyal passenger (who’s the best co-pilot on the planet, of course), respect people’s needs to take some time.
It can be easy to try to rush, but that’s not the point of this trip.
Road trips are supposed to be a fun, lackadaisical time spent exploring and going with the flow. Of all the things you can have on your trip, flexibility is maybe the most important. Things won’t go according to plan, but that doesn’t have to ruin your trip. Go at a pace that feels right to you, listen to your needs (as well as the needs of those you’re traveling with), and enjoy!
